A unified HR platform that replaced two separate tools for remote-first tech startups
OVERVIEW
The Challenge
HR teams at remote-first tech startups were relying on two separate third-party tools to manage what should have been a single workflow: vacation request approvals and employee data management. The context switching, duplicated records, and lack of a unified approval trail were creating constant friction for HR managers. The goal was to replace both tools with a single proprietary platform that unified the request flow and centralized all employee information in one place.
My Approach
I led the end-to-end UX/UI design process using a User-Centered Design methodology. Starting with user interviews with HR managers, I mapped their existing workflows and surfaced the specific pain points: duplicate data entry, fragmented approval chains, and no clear audit trail. With those insights, I built information architecture diagrams, low-fidelity wireframes, and an interactive Figma prototype — testing each iteration with HR users before advancing. The final deliverable was a full high-fidelity design including a design system with typography, color palette, and reusable components.

PROCESS
How I got there
Research & Discovery
Conducted user interviews with HR managers to map existing workflows. Identified the core pain points: duplicate data entry across two platforms and a fragmented approval process with no clear audit trail.
Information Architecture
Defined the platform's core modules — employee directory, vacation request flow, approval pipeline, and reporting — and structured the navigation to match HR managers' mental models.
Wireframes & Prototyping
Built low-fidelity wireframes in Figma, ran two rounds of usability testing, and iterated based on feedback. Delivered a full high-fidelity prototype with a complete design system: typography scale, color tokens, and a reusable component library.
Handoff & Iteration
Delivered annotated design specs to the development team, supported implementation with weekly design reviews, and refined the UI based on feedback from early internal testing sessions.
